"Converting a compliance and regulatory obligation into a successful change strategy can open  new ways of thinking and increased trust within the teams "

by Future State Partners

We all face a dilemma  at our workplace which is constantly demanding for us to change due to variety of reasons . We normally call it SPECTRES of Change

1. Social 2. Political(global)/political(local/ office) 3. Economic(macro)/ economic(micro)

4. Commercial 5. Technological 6. Regulations 7. Environment(global)/ environment (local)

8. Safety/ security (WHS)

(each letter in the acronym carries a meaning , today we are focussing on  Regulations(in other words compliance or contractual obligations etc.)

We all have role to play towards changes happening around us ( whether we like it or not) .If you ever felt discouraged for bringing about a change within your teams just because some unknown and not so well understood compliance or regulatory requirements might get affected , we have a recipe for you on how to go about it.

In my recent exploratory conversation with VP of a large Medical Devices Manufacturing , Supply Chain and Logistics organisation , we realised most of the Regulatory and compliance related changes are often perceived as a roadblock for fresh thinking. Only few people in the organisations were able to think beyond this perception constraint  and majority were not able to connect with the underlying idea of change coming from the regulatory and contractual side of the business.

This happens mainly because (purely based on our experience) we welcome the changes which we chose to do on our own or we were party to it (may be we feel comfortable at those changes as we understand them well) .Regulatory & compliance obviously fall on other side of the office glass door. Hence it becomes increasingly challenging to find the appropriate motivation towards accepting them. We agree the onus lies with someone with in the business to come down and explain detailed impact of the change in a way we can understand it (the people who are being affected rather than consuming jargonised version of change)

In most cases we find that someone is always missing or at least simpler way of explanation is missing . We will all face this . Today we will try to change not the situation but the perspective of how to gain benefits from this confusing situation

How to use these already available Regulatory compliance as a bridge for change journey?

On continuing my conversation with the VP, we further discovered that there has to be an easier way to accommodate regulatory changes. One noble we were able to think of is it create the changes as part of change adoption culture in such a way that changes are proactively discussed with each individual in a structured manner such that a departmental wide information can be gathered . This information can contain answers / opinions for few of the questions like

1) In your opinion how this particular change can affect form , fit , function of the product or service we supply to our customers?

2) In your opinion, how do you see your teams performance or our readiness is  to accept / implement the change

Once we have all the information , let the change occur on a disclosed day and let it pass through all the regulatory checks with appropriate acceptance criteria in place (this can also include opinions gathered in the stages above) . Let this report be published to the wider audience at a departmental level.

Regardless of the change under discussion , you have achieved a collaborative, positive and systematic environment  for all the future changes as well, which we feel is need of the hour
